Why home grooming matters
Professional grooming salons in India range from excellent to genuinely harmful - many use human-grade products or do not sterilise equipment between dogs. Learning basic home grooming protects your dog's health and saves Rs 500-2000 per session.
What you actually need
- pH-balanced dog shampoo (not human shampoo)
- A conditioning spray or leave-in conditioner
- A slicker brush or de-shedding tool for double coats
- Nail clippers
- Ear cleaning solution and cotton balls
Step by step
Step 1 - Brush before bathing: Always brush before getting the coat wet. Wet knots tighten and are much harder to remove.
Step 2 - Wet the coat completely: Use lukewarm water. Wet from the neck down first, then the face and head last. Saturate thick coats fully.
Step 3 - Shampoo technique: Apply to your hands first, not directly to the dog. Work in circular motions from neck to tail. Spend 2-3 minutes massaging. Leave on for 1-2 minutes before rinsing.
Step 4 - Rinse until water runs clear: Residual shampoo causes itching and skin irritation. Rinse longer than you think is necessary.
Step 5 - Ear cleaning: Wipe visible debris from the outer ear with a cotton ball. In India's humidity, ears should be checked every 2 weeks.
Step 6 - Dry and brush again: Towel dry gently. Air-dry in a well-ventilated space. Once 80% dry, brush again to prevent matting.
